Different Kinds of Bookcases

Bookcases come in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. They can be made out of many different kinds of material, from the traditional wood, to glass, metal, or plastic. Depending on the type of book, and space considerations, there are a lot of options. Some of the different types of bookcases are:
Traditional: As the name implies, this type of bookcase is usually placed up against a wall and shelves standard-size books. They will be found in many different heights and widths but are usually made of wood. A 4 shelf bookcase is most common form of traditional bookcase.

Barrister: This kind of bookcase originated in a law office where there was frequent use of heavy volumes. Therefore, they are of sturdy construction to hold a lot of weight. Barrister bookcases have doors with glass panels for easy viewing. The doors either flip up or slide back for the easy retrieval of books. This kind of bookcase is usually made of higher quality wood. With their doors, they help protect the contents from dust and extreme temperatures. Therefore, many people use them to display rare books or antiques.
Corner: Though regular-size books do not usually fit, these kinds of bookcases are perfect for knick-knacks and other small collectibles. They do not take up a lot of space and can decorate an otherwise dull or empty corner of a room.

Bookcase walls. If a larger number of books are being stored or displayed, a built-in bookcase will create a large storage area. Often several bookcase walls are installed in one room to achieve the library look.
