Metal bookcases come in a variety of styles and finishes, so the type of metal you choose for your bookcase should allow for a sleek look. The colors give you a range of choices if you would like to add your own twist to a contemporary design. Metal Bookcases that have a simple design and little to no detail will blend well with your contemporary design.
Floating bookcases are esthetically appealing and will be appreciated by anyone that enters your home. They are two different kinds of floating bookcases. One is hung up on the wall above the ground giving it the appearance that is floating. The second is designed so that once the books are stacked the shelving sort of disappears making the books appear to be floating in thin air. These are good for small spaces as they are less obvious and make the room seem larger.
A cube bookcase has simple straight square shelving. These are very popular since they are the basic style of bookcases. These bookcases have a hip modern look with clean, smooth lines. Cube bookcases are general modular meaning they can be stacked upward or outward and can even hang up on the wall. This style of bookcase is perfect for someone who has limited space and lots of books
A ladder bookcase generally leans back against the wall and has a tapered design that resembles a ladder. The shelving starts out wide at the bottom then tapers out giving it a stylish appeal.

How to Spruce Up Your Bookcases

Bookcases are a common sight in many homes. People use bookcases to store all sorts of things, not simply just books. They can often become cluttered and unsightly. However, this doesn't have to be the case. Here are some tips on jazzing up your bookcases so that they go from bland to grand. It won't cost you a fortune either.

When dressing up a bookcase, you need to think about lines and balance. The bookcase walls is often a main focal point in a room and unfortunately, bookcases often tend to get cluttered up with knick knacks, books, magazines, and random bits that have no place to go. The first step in creating a pleasing, well dressed bookcase is to weed out any old books and other things that you don't use often or that simply look worn and tattered. Place these things out of sight, in a box or drawer. You may want to remove all paperbacks altogether, as these can easily be damaged. This is especially helpful if you're a pack rat. All those cheap paperbacks need to go. Keep your nice art books and reference books out for display.

Place larger books on the bottom shelves; doing the reverse will make the top look too heavy, giving the appearance of instability. You don't want to give the impression that your bookshelf will topple at any moment. Place the large books on the bottom shelves along with decorative items. The smaller books should go on the top.

For those who don't have that many books at all, grouping the books together will have the most lasting visual impact. Place your books in groups of five or ten and fill in the blank spots with decorative items such as vases, pictures, plants, candles etc. Just don't go overboard. It's far too easy to go accessory crazy. Make sure to take a step back once in a while to gauge your progress. Try grouping similar items together by theme, texture, shape or color to unify your display.

You can use your bookcases to show off your collections. Intersperse them with books or reserve a shelf entirely for your collection.

Add more depth to your display by varying the heights of objects you display. A combination of tall and short objects makes an interesting visual contrast.

Add framed pictures of your loved ones, favorite accessories, candles and candle holders, and bookends. Plants make great accessories too.

Add some sparkle with glass jars or metallic and silver objects. Pairing up a collection of vases or pottery of different shapes will make your display stand out.

Think about arranging your books like art. Organize them by color. For instance, place all your blue books on one shelf and place your green books below them. Or you could even organize your books by similar type face. Group books by similar subject matter, or by size.

Remember that books can be stacked side by side, and you can also stand them up end to end. You can mix and match vertical lines and horizontal lines for greater impact.
